Some Bible verses are popular and known in part because they appear on household decor, shirts and jewelry. You may even see these verses, such as John 3:16 and Joshua 1:9, around the assisted living community in Creve Coeur. But the Bible is full of great verses and wisdom that are worth diving into.
Here are five lesser known Bible verses that you may want to unpack during personal devotional time or with others in community Bible Study at Autumn View Gardens.
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23
Even though Lamentations 3 starts with a man who has "seen affliction", it hits this high note in the middle, with the speaker praising God and his unceasing love. The verse reminds us to praise God in all things and to remember that God is always faithful and always loves us.
“Therefore, do not continue in ignorance, but try to understand what is the will of the Lord.” Ephesians 5:17
This is one of the many verses in Ephesians that seems made for a memory verse, so if you're looking for part of the Word to hide in your heart, this might be a good Scripture to turn to. It reminds us to turn to God first in all things instead of trying to forge our own way.
“The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace!” Numbers 6:24-26
If you've sped-read through Numbers — or just skipped over most of it entirely — during any Bible reading you've done in your lifetime, you wouldn't be alone. But you can find some truly inspirational stuff in between the details of tribal camps and which jobs belonged to whom. Numbers 6:24-26 isn't just a great, uplifting verse — it's a model prayer you can use when praying in general for others.
“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” Numbers 23:19
Here's another great one from Numbers. It reminds us that God is not human. It seems like a simple thing, but it can be easy to think that God thinks as we do or sees things as a human does. Remembering that God is not man and that he doesn't lie or need to repent — and that he keeps all his promises — can be important.
“Who among you is wise? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom.” James 3:13
James 3:13 calls out those who have gained wisdom in their lives to live in humility and service to God. This one may read like an anthem for many people in the senior living community, who have amassed knowledge and wisdom in their life, and it's also a reminder to share those things with others in a good and Godly way.
